Columbus dog adoption events

From German shepherds and bulldogs to poodles, beagles, and every breed in between, your furry best friend is waiting for you in Columbus. Below, we outline key dog adoption events coming to central Ohio in 2026. Let’s take a look!

Know Your Adoption Options: The Difference Between Columbus Foster-Rescues, Walk-In Shelters, and Events

When you’re starting the process of adopting a dog, no matter if they’re a puppy or a senior, you want to be prepared for the entire process. The good news is Columbus holds several different kinds of adoption events and ways to adopt! Whether you’re interested in a Columbus walk-in shelter or a foster-based rescue, there are countless options for finding the right pooch for you and where!

Key Takeaway:
Foster-based rescues are not the same as brick-and-mortar adoption shelters. If you’re interested in adopting from a foster shelter, you’ll need to apply and then meet with dogs who have been living in real homes with volunteers or staff.

Walk-in shelters are businesses you can physically visit and have the opportunity to meet with multiple dogs in one trip. This is a great option for open-minded folks just looking to see who is out there so they can make a natural connection. National adoption events vary and can offer different dog breeds, in addition to reduced fees. We’ve gone ahead and rounded up options around the Columbus area for you, so let’s dig in.

Columbus Walk-In Shelters

You may still be undecided if you’re ready to add pet ownership to your life, or maybe you’re curious about how your current pets may interact with a new addition. Regardless of your circumstances, Columbus has ongoing dog adoptions so you can make your decision when the time feels right.

  • The Franklin County Dog Shelter holds adoptions every day of the week, weekdays being 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and weekends being 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Another great option is the Columbus Humane Society, which is open Tuesday to Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • You can also visit CHA Animal Shelter, which has tons of fun events like Puppy Yoga in addition to their normal adoption hours. Weekdays run from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (except for Wednesday), and weekends 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Note:
Hours are subject to change based on each facility’s discretion; please check online prior to visiting.

If you don’t want to wait for massive pet expo events, but can’t make it to normal shelter hours, you can also attend these pop-up events that happen on a regular basis:

  • Pet Palace is proud to partner with events such as “Mingle with Our Mutts” hosted by the Columbus Dog Connection. This event allows you to meet with many different dogs and is held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Franklin County Dog Shelter.
  • Colony Cats (& Dogs) also hosts pet placements through the Upper Arlington Petco each Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Don’t let the name make you shy away; they place both cats and dogs in their loving forever homes).
  • PetSmart stores hold daily adoptions from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. In fact, a pet finds their forever home every 38 seconds in PetSmart stores across the country. Find your location on the PetSmart site.

What to Expect When Attending a Dog Adoption Event

Each adoption event is different. You may be in a small dog shelter in Columbus and browsing through a handful of pups, or you might be at a large-scale event with dogs as far as the eye can see. The important thing to understand is what to expect at these events, so let’s get you prepared!

Many rescues will have adoptable pets listed on their websites, so you can see who is available before making the trip. You can scroll to your heart’s content, or until you have the “that’s them” moment. When you’re preparing to go to the shelter, make sure you’ve done the necessary pre-work: Fill out any applications required and make sure to bring your photo ID.

Note:
Some foster-based rescues require a home visit first. Make sure to call ahead of time so you aren’t surprised.

Also, be sure to ask the right questions. After you’ve met your future fur baby, make sure to discuss all fees with shelter staff. And remember that each facility has a different set of requirements and inclusions, so take those into account. The best way to make sure your new best friend comes home is to limit the number of financial surprises.
